The bill climbed in May. The bill climbed again in June. By the middle of July it has pushed past $300, the thermostat has not moved off 74, and nobody in the house is doing anything differently. That is usually the week a family starts calling around about air conditioning north richland hills tx, trying to work out whether a repair is worth paying for or just one more expense landing on a single income. Here is the short version. On a system that is genuinely struggling, a tune-up or a targeted repair costs less than the extra electricity that system will burn between now and September.

Where a Summer Electric Bill Actually Goes

Cooling is the largest single line on that bill, and it is not close. The federal Energy Information Administration puts air conditioning at 19 percent of residential site electricity as of 2020, ahead of water heating, refrigeration, and lighting. In North Texas, where a condenser can run most of the daylight hours from June through September, the local share sits higher than that national figure. Everything else on the statement is rounding by comparison.

Rates have been moving too, which muddies the picture. CBS News reported in June 2026 that the average monthly electric bill in the United States climbed about 23 percent between 2019 and 2024. The house did not get bigger during those five years. So part of that $300 is the utility and part of it is the equipment, and separating the two is where most homeowners stall out.

Separating them is easier than it sounds. Texas customers can pull their own fifteen minute interval usage, free, from the Smart Meter Texas portal, which shows exactly when the draw spikes and when it settles back down. The case we see most often is a system that has stopped cycling off overnight, a flat shelf of usage from ten at night until six in the morning where a dip used to sit. A rate increase never does that. A failing capacitor, a choked coil, or a low charge does.

The Cost of Fixing Versus Ignoring It

Doing nothing has a price, and the hottest states show what that looks like at the extreme. CBS News put Arizona households on track to spend $1,060 on summer electricity, up nearly 14 percent from the year before. Tarrant County is not Phoenix, but the mechanism is identical, a system working harder than it should, four months straight, at whatever the current rate happens to be.

Most of the air conditioning North Richland Hills TX homes need in July is small work, a run capacitor or a contactor or a condenser coil nobody has rinsed in three years. Parts like those are not expensive on their own. What they do is force the compressor to run longer for the same 74 degrees, and that extra runtime is the thing showing up on the statement.

Run the numbers on one house. Last July the bill was $196, this July it is $312, same setting, same four people under the roof. That is $116 of extra draw in a single month. A tune-up with a coil cleaning and a new run capacitor lands around $190 here. If that work claws back $70 a month, four hot months comes to $280 recovered against $190 spent. Call it $55 a month instead, since no repair makes a fifteen year condenser new again, and it still comes to $220 against that same $190.

The repair is the cheaper line. It usually is, by a wide margin.

Small Repairs Often Pay for Themselves

The trap is treating a service call as a discretionary expense while treating the electric bill as a fixed one. On a system that is running uphill, it is the other way around. Get the coil cleaned, the charge checked, and the capacitor tested before the August peak, and the difference lands on the next statement instead of a year from now. If the numbers still do not move, that is worth knowing too. The answer would then be the rate plan or the ductwork, not the condenser. Either way the household stops guessing, and guessing is the part that quietly costs the most.
