The New Rules of Dating Etiquette in the App Era

Dating apps changed the rules of dating, and honestly, most of us are still figuring them out. Let’s see some of the new rules so you don’t come off as rude unintentionally.

When to Reply (And When Not To)

There was a time when texting back too fast made you look desperate, but that thinking is now outdated. If you want to respond, respond. Playing games with response times just wastes everyone’s energy.

That said, you’re not obligated to reply to every message. If someone sends you a “hey” with zero effort, you can let it slide. Your time matters. Good conversations need both people to bring something to the table.

Most people using platforms like the Hily dating app or similar services face the same question: how long is too long to wait before messaging? There’s no perfect time. A day or two is fine. A week without explanation sends a clear message that you’re not interested.

Ghosting became the norm somewhere along the way, but it’s still rude. If you’re not feeling it after a few messages, a simple “I don’t think we’re a match, but good luck out there” works. Takes five seconds and saves someone from wondering what happened.

    First Date Rules

Video calls before meeting in person became a standard, and honestly, it’s a pretty smart move. A ten-minute chat helps you figure out if the chemistry you felt through messages translates to an actual conversation. Plus, it confirms the person matches their photos.

Don’t just assume the other person will take care of the bill. This isn’t 1950. Some people prefer to split everything down the middle, while others like alternating who pays. Talk about it before the check arrives. Money awkwardness ruins good dates.

Pick a public spot for first meetings. This should go without saying because your safety comes first. Tell a friend where you’re going and when you expect to be back.

Meet sooner rather than later. Endless messaging builds up unrealistic expectations. You can’t really know someone until you’re sitting across from them.

    Your Profile Picture

Use recent photos. Using pictures from five years ago sets everyone up for disappointment. You wouldn’t show up to a date in a costume, so don’t catfish people with old photos.

Your main picture should be just you, no group shots. Nobody wants to play “guess who” with your friend group. And for the love of everything, include at least one clear face shot.

    Focus on Safety

Dating apps have different approaches to verification and user safety. Some apps like Hily have introduced safety features to help users verify their identity, moderate user activities, and listen to users’ safety concerns. Look for apps like Hily dating with clear safety features and active moderation.

Dating apps work when you use them honestly. Present the real you and try to meet someone who likes that, not a polished version you can’t maintain. Good matches come from being yourself, even if that means fewer matches overall.
