There are lots of youngsters around the whole of Australia who love different sports from an early age and dream of one day being good enough to play at the highest level in front of huge crowds and appear on TV. This might be through the encouragement of parents and playing in the backyard at an early age, learning at school, or perhaps by watching it being played on TV with others.
Sometimes those kids have an opportunity to visit a stadium or arena which further excites their desire. Those who are blessed with the skills and a will to succeed and are determined to put in the long hours so that they are unlikely to require a sex doll as a companion in later life have the most chance of reaching the top. The world has thankfully moved on in many ways, but why do many famous people such as sports stars feel that they cannot tell the world that they are gay?
Sadly, the modern world sees much attention being garnered through social media platforms. There are lots of people who use it to stay in touch with friends and are extremely positive when they post, perhaps passing on greetings and posting beautiful images and uplifting videos. Then there are other individuals who grab the opportunity to spread hatred and are nasty for no real reason. It is quite sad that some look for the chance to simply cause upset and misery. While many good decent humans would accept any sports star being openly gay, the amount of abuse in return that they would face would not only cause them distress but also their partner, friends, and family. Getting over such trauma is far more difficult than boosting confidence with a smile.
Crowds inside stadiums can also contain an element that looks to give opposing players the benefit of their opinions. It might be their size or new haircut that they use to try and unsettle them. Sadly, a person’s colour and religion was also used as bait, though thankfully this is now being clamped down as those guilty of offending face justice. However, should a sports star reveal their sexuality, they know that a certain percentage of those in attendance will need no second invitation to get stuck into someone simply looking to live a normal life and perform at their best.
Employees are likely to understand the privacy act regarding some personal data and are likely to protect their star should they require it. However, the intrusion from the media is unlikely to go away, as they look to generate their next big story. Colleagues in the changing rooms are likely to be supportive, especially if their teammate gives the same effort as everyone else, although it is understandable when an individual fears the backlash and has to continue carrying a secret that they shouldn’t have to.
Hopefully, an increasingly enlightened society will allow any gay sportsperson to come out without fear of abuse or media intrusion.
