School fundraisers are annual events. Sometimes, schools hold multiple fundraisers per year. These projects are essential for giving students the tools and resources they need to excel not only academically but physically, mentally, and emotionally. Though schools receive funding on both the state and federal level, that money isn’t always enough to truly meet students’ needs.

Whether you’re working toward buying new band uniforms, financing an out-of-state field trip, or building a community outreach program, a fundraiser can help make it happen. Of course, organizing a truly effective school fundraiser requires careful planning and coordination. The following steps can help you carry out a fundraiser that will bring your goals to life.

    • 1 Build a Team
    • 2 Choose a Fundraising Method
    • 3 Set a Budget and Timeline
    • 4 Promote Your Fundraiser
    • 5 Successfully Raising Money for Your School

    Build a Team

One of the first steps you should take when organizing a fundraiser is to build a team to help bring it together. Fundraisers are major undertakings with numerous factors involved. Never try to do it all on your own. You can ask parents, faculty members, representatives from local businesses, and many other people to help.

Try to choose team members with diverse skill sets. From there, delegate responsibilities, like budgeting, logistics, and marketing, based on team members’ strengths. Be sure to bring the team together regularly to keep everyone updated on various points and ensure you remain on schedule.

    Choose a Fundraising Method

You’ll also need to choose a fundraising method. It needs to be one that’s likely to attract attention and appeal to plenty of people. Some popular ideas include selling candy, wrapping paper, cookie dough, engraved bricks, and fruit. Car washes, bake sales, and carnivals are also effective options. As you’re contemplating ideas, consider how much money they’ll cost versus how much profit they’re likely to bring in.

    Set a Budget and Timeline

It’s also important to set a budget and timeline for your fundraiser. Factor in all costs involved in bringing the event together, including materials and advertising. Depending on the type of event you choose, you may need to add in venue rental fees, permits, insurance, and other expenses. Take care not to go over your budget because doing so will eat into your profit.

In terms of the timeline, give yourself and your team plenty of time to plan and prepare. Give your audience ample time to plan ahead to participate as well. At the same time, be sure the money you raise will be available in time to cover the cause you’re funding. If it’s a one-day event, be sure you schedule it on a day that doesn’t conflict with other major school or community events.

    Promote Your Fundraiser

Promoting your fundraiser is equally important; after all, the more people who know about it, the more participation you’ll have. Try to reach as many people as you can with your marketing and advertising. You can promote the event on the school website and through emails to parents. Handing out flyers and displaying posters at local businesses can help spread the word as well. Of course, social media is sure to be an effective promotional tool.

Successfully Raising Money for Your School

Fundraisers are crucial for supplementing the funding schools get from the state and federal government. Numerous types of events can help you raise money for students and the community. Teamwork and effective planning, budgeting, and marketing are the keys to success. Following the steps listed here can help you bring your goals to fruition.
