Setting up a proxy server on your Windows 10 computer can provide an additional layer of security, help you access geo-restricted content, and improve privacy by masking your IP address. While there are various ways to configure a proxy, doing it manually gives you more control over the settings. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to manually set up a proxy server on Windows 10.

    Contents

    • 1 Step 1: Access Proxy Settings
    • 2 Step 2: Configure Proxy Settings Manually
    • 3 Step 3: Testing the Proxy Server
    • 4 Step 4: Disable Proxy (If Needed)
    • 5 Conclusion

    Step 1: Access Proxy Settings

    1. Open the Settings App: Click on the Start menu and select the Settings gear icon to open the Settings app.
    2. Navigate to Network & Internet: In the Settings app, click on Network & Internet.
    3. Select Proxy: On the left-hand menu, scroll down and select Proxy. This will take you to the proxy settings page where you can configure your proxy server.

Step 2: Configure Proxy Settings Manually

    1. Automatic Proxy Setup: Before proceeding with manual setup, you’ll see an option for Automatic proxy setup. If you prefer to manually enter your proxy information, toggle “Automatically detect settings” to Off.
    2. Manual Proxy Setup: Scroll down to the Manual proxy setup section.
    3. Turn on the Manual Proxy Setup: Toggle the switch under “Use a proxy server” to On.
    4. Enter Proxy Server Information:
      • Address: Enter the IP address of the proxy server.
      • Port: Enter the port number associated with the proxy server.
    5. Exclusion List (Optional): If there are specific websites or addresses you want to bypass the proxy server, enter them in the “Use the proxy server except for addresses that start with the following entries” field. For multiple entries, separate them with semicolons.
    6. Save Settings: After entering all the required information, click on Save to apply the settings.

Step 3: Testing the Proxy Server

    1. Open a Web Browser: Launch your preferred web browser and try to visit a website.
    2. Verify Connection: If the proxy server is working correctly, you should be able to access the internet as usual, but through the proxy server’s IP address.
    3. Troubleshoot if Necessary: If you encounter issues, double-check the proxy server’s address and port, and ensure that they are entered correctly.

Step 4: Disable Proxy (If Needed)

If you ever need to disable the proxy server:

    1. Return to Proxy Settings: Go back to the Proxy settings page through the same steps as before.
    2. Turn Off the Proxy Server: Toggle the switch under “Use a proxy server” to Off.
    3. Save Settings: Click Save to apply the changes.

    Conclusion

Manually setting up a proxy server on Windows 10 is a straightforward process that can enhance your privacy and security online. Whether you need to access region-locked content or secure your browsing activities, configuring a proxy server can be an effective solution. Just ensure that you have the correct proxy server details before proceeding, and always test your connection to confirm that the setup was successful.
